With the summer finally coming to a close and schools all over Texas reopening their doors, it’s time to get some last minute relaxing in before the hectic fall takes over our schedules. What better place to do that than the 4 Star Concert Hall, Brenham’s best new venue? This weekend will have an exciting slate of shows: Wood & Wire and openers Shane Cooley & The Midnight Girls playing this Friday and the Van Wilks Trio performing this Saturday.

This Friday, August 23, the Austin-based Wood & Wire will be headlining. Mixing bluegrass instrumentation and virtuosity with country-tinged songwriting makes Wood and Wire one of the more promising bands to come out of this area for a while. In fact, their most recent album, 2018’s “North of Despair,” was nominated for a Grammy Award. With astonishingly fast acoustic jams one minute and old-fashioned country ballads the next, Wood & Wire’s performance sweeps you up in a whirlwind of energy. Opening for Wood & Wire is Shane Cooley & the Midnight Girls. A veteran songsmith of the Texas acoustic scene, Cooley’s skill in poetically turning a phrase is just as sure to delight you as is his skill with a guitar. The next day, you’ll get a real treat: Van Wilks and his band will make an appearance! This Texas Music Hall of Famer is a legendary blues guitarist who has been a leader of the Austin music scene for three decades, playing a kind of riff-heavy blues rock that is instantly recognizable. Yet, despite coming from a state that is historically packed full of excellent blues artists (does ZZ Top and Stevie Ray Vaughan ring any bells?), Wilks’ virtuoso guitar playing and unique songwriting sense makes his music stand out. His career has circled the globe, both on his own and with greats such as Van Halen, Heart, Journey and Aerosmith. Don’t miss your chance to catch this Texas legend!
