Close games. That is the modus operandi for the Aggie Men’s Basketball Team. The Aggies (10-8) are just 3-6 in games decided by 10 points or less. Three of those losses are in SEC play where the Aggies are off to a 2-5 start.
Let’s be honest, it hasn’t been a pretty start for the Aggies who came into the season as the defending SEC regular season champions. But this is clearly a different team. Household names like Danuel House, Jalen Jones, and Alex Caruso are no longer on the roster.
But maybe the tides are turning. A&M is on a 1 game winning streak. OK, one game isn’t a streak, but we will take what we can get. That win comes in somewhat controversial fashion. Georgia was at Reed Arena last saturday with a 10 point lead and two minutes remaining in the game. Then the Aggies took over. The Aggies took the lead with 16.5 seconds left. On the next possession Georgia brought the ball up the court and set up for the final shot.
But then the clock malfunctioned with 5.6 seconds remaining, except no one noticed. Play continued, a foul was called on A&M sending Georgia to the line with a chance to take the lead. It was at this point that the officials went back and checked the clock. They determined too much time had run off the clock prior to the foul being called. Just like that, the game was over. Aggies win.
“Our kid (Frazier) looks up and thinks he has time to make a play, but he doesn’t,” Fox said. “I don’t know who stopped the clock; I’d like to know,” Georgia Coach Mark Fox said after the game.
A&M has a midweek game against Ole Miss (Jan. 25) before heading to #7 West Virginia. If the Aggies want to even think about being in the discussion for March Madness, they need to get the job done on the court. A win on the road over a top 10 team would be a great place to start.
“I have seen them win and I have seen them lose, but I have never seen them quit.” We shall soon see.
