Learn about the Brazos Valley’s unique history while enjoying lunch! The Southwood Community Center, in conjunction with the College Station Historic Preservation Committee, will be hosting a history luncheon each Wednesday, in which historians will come and discuss various aspects of our community’s history.
This month, on March 21, Lisa Berg will be covering Washington on the Brazos. This historic site offers visitors a unique insight into the lives of the men who fought and won Texas’ independence from Mexico.
On April 18, Rachel Medders will be presenting on the Carnegie History Center in Bryan. In January, Joseph Nagavary, professor emeritus in biochemistry at Texas A&M, discussed the Stradivarius Violin, which is a unique type of violin. He theorized in 1976 that chemicals used on the instrument are responsible for the distinctive sound of the violin. His research involved obtaining wood samples from Stradivarius restorers. Additionally, this past month Lucile Young covered the Lincoln Center.
The older adults program at the Southwood Community Center aims to provide a comfortable place to socialize and engage in activities and programs. They have several programs such as dominoes, bridge, Mah Jongg, computer classes, movies, a library, and much more.
