The second half of the 37th season of the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra (BVSO) kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 10, with an exciting evening featuring music “From Classics to Jazz.”
International composer and jazz pianist Rob Clearfield will make his return to BVSO, having performed in the Brazos Valley previously. This time, Clearfield will take on the role of composer, presenting a program featuring original music, including a world premiere.
In his portion of the program, Clearfield will be accompanied by Caroline Davis, Sam Weber and Allan Mednard and will perform three pieces written for string orchestra and jazz quartet. It will be the world debut for the second song, “A Door Opens.”
“I was really looking to write something that would be something that really depended equally and completely on both strings and jazz,” Clearfield said. “It really couldn’t happen without both worlds.”
Clearfield’s segment of the evening will follow performances by William Grant Still and Jaime Zenamon. Grant Still will bring the well-loved “Danzas de Panama” to life while Zenamon will perform on “Caribbean Suite.”
It will be a very wonderful and exciting evening, Dr. Mary Koeninger, executive director of BVSO, said. Clearfield is one of a long list of big hitters performing this year. “It’s a very big season,” Koeninger said.
Every year, BVSO puts on a pop series, holiday concerts and programs targeting children, which makes sure Koeninger and the BVSO stay very busy.
