Being a leader can be difficult at times, especially when you’re just starting out. If you’re eager to learn more about what being a leader looks like, check out the leadership conference hosted by MSC Waves. This annual event is open to anyone interested in leadership. This year’s conference takes place Feb. 22 in REC 2229A from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. You’ll have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers, reflect on your experiences as a leader, and gain knowledge for the future.
The student organization responsible for the conference is MSC: Freshmen in Service and Hosting or FISH. Their student-run organization strives to instill Texas A&M University’s core value of Selfless Service in its members by providing opportunities to actively engage in serving the campus and community.
According to their website, members have humbly volunteered for over 48,000 hours of community service to Bryan/College Station, Texas A&M, and surrounding cities since they began in 2000.
MSC Waves serves as one of the four sub-committees for MSC FISH. The group seeks to produce and develop servant leaders on and off campus. Every year, Waves puts on a skills workshop that teaches others how their leadership skills can go much further than they may expect. Destiny Cotto, freshman student member, says that the group focuses mainly on outreach and networking opportunities for those interested in leadership. “The leadership conference usually takes place in the spring and is open to anyone interested in attending, not just students,” says Cotto.
At the conference, you’ll be able to apply your own knowledge of selfless service by participating in group discussions and activities in order to improve your own personal skills as a leader while meeting a diverse group of fellow student leaders. “The kinds of activities are often up to the speakers, but are meant to give a new perspective of leadership,” says Cotto. You’ll also be able to hear from guest speakers Jeremy Spicer and Dr. Tia Crawford as they each share their first-hand experience as a leader and what it looks like to step up and truly lead others.
Apart from being Band Director at Vandegrift High School, Spicer is owner of SASI, or Solutions and Specialized Innovations. This student leadership consulting firm believes that students become empowered to succeed in their organizations and their lives when they’re armed with the proper knowledge and understanding of the community around them. Dr. Crawford works at TAMU’s Leadership and Service Center and is Advisor of the Freshman Leadership Advisory Council.
Registration for the conference is open online. Individual tickets start at $10. Group tickets are discounted at $8, so be sure to gather some friends to go with you!
