It will be a big start to the weekend for music in Downtown Bryan as the Grand Stafford Theater hosts multiple performers leading up to First Friday.
It all kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 28, as John Marc takes the stage with Mountains Like Wax, Author and Antique Gardens. Marc, a Dallas-native singer-songwriter, headlines the evening. With indie pop vibes mixed in with his performances, Marc manages to write about the truth of life and what is worth singing about. “Making a Move” is a perfect representation of his work, telling the story of young love with that old-school feeling of songs found in movies such as “16 Candles” or “The Breakfast Club.”
Joining Marc on stage Thursday evening will be Mountains Like Wax. Described as a cogent blend of Southern post rock, Mountains Like Wax has a relaxing edge to their sound. At times, the group sounds very high tempo, but that is quickly followed by slower moments and accompanied by poignant lyrics, creating a very unique experience for listeners. A great example of this is in the song “Control,” which starts out very upbeat before shifting into a relaxed sound.
Minnesota-based Author will also perform Thursday night. The three-piece indie rock band will feature a similar yet distinguishing sound from the other performers. The band has the traditional indie rock sound while the vocals are more mellow. The creative lyrics for the songs create a dreamlike soundscape and unique atmosphere, which will compliment the venue perfectly. Songs like “Forget” and “Want” show off the group’s abilities vocally while highlighting the engaging sound it produces at live shows.
Antique Gardens will be the final group performing for the evening. This indie emo band from Bryan displays an interesting sound that compliments the other performances from the night. Like the others, the instrumental portions of the songs shift from uptempo to mellow, but the lyrics are the highlight of the band. The song “Crack a Smile” makes listeners do just that after the first few words. What initially sounds like a petty, selfish message turns out to be a pretty relatable set of lyrics.
Friday, March 1, will take a different direction musically as the Reed Brothers take the stage at the Grand Stafford Theater. The San Antonio-based brothers Keegan and Kyle will bring their Americana-influenced sound that, combined with their songwriting skills, keeps audiences engaged and caught up in the music’s energy.
As always, these performances will be made even better as they take place at one of the best venues in all of the Brazos Valley. The historic Grand Stafford Theater features a great atmosphere and classic charm that elevates the live music experience.
Doors open for the Thursday show at 8 p.m., with music starting 30 minutes later. Friday’s show will begin at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7:30. Tickets for the First Friday event will be free.

The New Braunfels-based band will bring their Americana-influenced sound that can both rock an audience and soothe the soul. The band’s sound is very diverse, with a wide variety of uptempo and slower songs, which is also reflective of lead guitarist and vocalist Zack Walther’s voice. Whether the song is deep and soulful or strong and high-pitched, the audience is definitely going to enjoy this show.
