Million Dollar Quartet

By Evan Flores

Are you looking to relive some of Broadway’s greatest hits? Or are you seeking to experience what it was like to see some of music’s greatest hits live? This weekend, MSC OPAS is bringing back some of the most well-known singers of all time as they relive some of music’s greatest moments with Million Dollar Quartet: The Broadway Musical Inspired by The Greatest Jam Session in History.

The event will have impersonators representing a number of musical talents from classical rock and roll, such as Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley altogether. The show Million Dollar Quartet is set on December 4, 1956, when a miraculous twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley together in a match made in heaven. That day, Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” who was responsible for launching the careers of each icon, gathered the four legendary musicians at the Sun Records storefront studio in Memphis for the first and only time. The resulting evening became known as one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions in history and influenced generations of artists for years to come.

The international musical has gained fame with a number of awards and famous impersonators that make up the show. “Million Dollar Quartet” received three Tony Award nominations in 2010 (Best Musical, Book of a Musical and Actor in a Featured Role). Levi Kreis won the Tony Award for Actor in a Featured Role (“Memphis” won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Musical).

The cast is made up of a number of talented artists, such as Evan Buckley Harris portraying Johnny Cash, Jason Cohen as Jerry Lee Lewis, and Skip Robinson depicting one of the most recognizable rock superstars, Elvis Presley.  In addition to the lead singers, supporting roles include Matthew Scott playing the character of Sam Phillips, who discovered this dream team and Jackey Good will portray Dyanne, Elvis’ girlfriend that attended the session. The conglomerate of performers make up the talented cast and will be coming this weekend on A&M campus.

The performance will be at Rudder Auditorium February 19th and 20th, tickets can be found at the MSC OPAS site, along with more information about the event itself.
