Although it’s only September, it’s never too early to get in the spirit for Halloween. A horror film will give that extra haunted nudge into October. Netflix has added to its collection, the Oscar-winning American horror film “Sleepy Hollow,” which will have you double-checking the door locks before you go to bed.

Directed by the talented and eccentric Tim Burton, the movie follows the disturbing adventure of Ichabod Crane, a constable sent to investigate a series of decapitations in Sleepy Hollow. The frightened townspeople believe it to be the work of a vengeful apparition, the Headless Horseman. However, Ichabod works tirelessly to unravel the town’s darkest secrets. In the process, he stumbles on unexpected supernatural forces that threaten the survival of the town.

Johnny Depp, as expected in any Burton film, excels in his role as Ichabod, bringing to the screen a fully developed character defined by quirky mannerisms and a dedication to the truth. Christina Ricci is cast as Katrina Van Tassel, Ichabod’s love interest, and she effortlessly captures the young woman’s air of innocence. Together these actors will have you on the edge of your seat as the quest to solve the murders becomes more perilous and the secrets more sinister. Lies are revealed. Loyalties are challenged. And you won’t know who to trust.

Beware though, because “Sleepy Hollow” is not for the squeamish or easily disturbed. The film is rated R for graphic horror violence and gore.
