What’s more Texas than tacos? Drive anywhere in this state, from the largest city to the tiniest township, and you’re likely to see multiple taco shops sprinkled throughout. One of the most popular Texas taco chains in the last decade has been the Austin based Torchy’s Tacos, which delivers quality street tacos inside a fun, slightly irreverent environment. For a few years now, Torchy’s has been offering a Taco of the Month, which are made of unique, experimental, and always delicious recipes. For August, they will not only feature a taco of the month, but they’ll also have new hotter than the blazes tacos each week.
To start off, the August taco of the month is the Bottle Rocket Shrimp taco, a recipe that is sure to be as hot and spicy as the month it is offered in. The Bottle Rocket Shrimp contains the perfect blend of sweet and spicy: “habanero battered fried shrimp, cabbage slaw, cotija cheese, candied jalapeños, cilantro and Diablo Mayo on a flour tortilla.” Doesn’t just reading about it make your mouth water? If not, just wait til next week! Ever heard of the Scoville scale? That’s the scientific, official way to measure the spicy hotness of food in units. So beware, taco lovers! With each new August taco of the month, the Scoville heat units will increase!
Available August 12-31, the Barnburner taco will sweep you away. This one’s mouth watering—wait—mouth melting, featuring “marinated and grilled beef, chopped bacon, manzano chile salad, Texas artisan goat cheese, cilantro, Avocado Sauce and Diablo Sauce on a flour tortilla.” Following that will be the The Creeper, on sale from August 19-31 and including “habanero battered fried chicken, chorizo, chopped bacon, brushfire jalapeños, cotija cheese, pickled onions, cilantro and Creamy Ghost Pepper Sauce on a flour tortilla.” From August 26-31 will be the hottest of them all, the Scalding Pig, with “pasilla and ghost pepper stewed pork, jack cheese, escabeche carrots, chicharrón, sour cream, cilantro and Torchy’s own XXX Hot Sauce on a flour tortilla.”
Wow! Those ought to get your taste buds rocking! And if you’re one of the first 100 people to order this item at your local Torchy’s, you’ll receive a limited edition, music festival themed poster. But that’s not all. There’s also a signature cocktail to complement the tacos. The Ranch Party mixes “Playa Real pineapple tequila, sweet and sour, Topo Chico, Tajin salt and lime,” and is sure to help you beat the heat—both outdoors and in your mouth after the tasty tacos!
Torchy’s was founded by Mike Rypka in Austin, who initially sold his tacos out of a truck. Since then, it has spread to more than 60 cities across Texas, and aids these communities by donating a portion of the proceeds from the Taco of the Month campaign to places like MD Anderson Cancer Center, Make-A-Wish and Phoenix House.
Known for their solid menu full of unique tacos, queso, and margaritas, Torchy’s has quickly become a Texas staple all across the state.
