Texas A&M’s baseball and softball seasons are in full swing this season. No pun intended. Each team has had a successful first half of the season, but there are still some big games ahead to test the Aggies swinging skills.
Aggie baseball is 23-11 overall with a 5-7 conference record. Conference play might have gotten off to a rocky start with a few tough losses to Kentucky and Vanderbilt, but the team is working hard to turn that around as they head into some important series against Alabama (April 13-15) and Tennessee (April 21-23). Both of these upcoming series are at home and the team could really use the full support of the 12th Man at Blue Bell Park.
Although conference play has started off slow, that hasn’t stopped some key players from putting on stellar performances and even winning some personal accolades along the way. Junior pitcher Brigham Hill has been a prominent figure thus far in the season. As the Aggies beat No. 8 LSU, 4-0, Hill did not allow a runner to reach second base in his eight innings on the mound. He struck out seven, and only allowed for three hits and two walks. This incredible performance earned him the honor of “SEC Pitcher of the Week” for the week of April 3 and we don’t think we’ve heard the last of him.
Currently ranked at #5 nationally, Aggie softball has had a tremendous first half of the season with a 35-3 overall record and 9-2 conference record. Softball came out of the gates strong, winning their first 4 conference series against Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Mizzou, and South Carolina. Not only did the Aggies run-rule South Carolina in their second game of the series, the Aggies tied the record for most runs scored in a conference game. Their 16-0 win over the Gamecocks is the most runs scored in a SEC game, and the 16 runs ties the school record for most runs scored in a conference game, first set at Oklahoma State on April 12, 2006.
Sophomore pitcher Samantha Show has been a driving force behind the team’s solid defense. In the Aggie’s 8-0 win over Ole Miss on March 18, Show struck out nine in five innings and allowed just two hits and two walks. Show allowed only one hit in the team’s 5-1 victory over Texas State and gave up just three hits and two walks against South Carolina. The Aggie softball team is looking solid on both offense and defense and has some great momentum as they head into some tough series against Arkansas and Georgia.
Both baseball and softball will host home series the weekend of April 22, as the men take on Tennessee and the women face Georgia. Break out the peanuts, Cracker Jack, and Blue Bell, and come out and support your teams as they head into the second half of the season!
