With the First Friday of every month comes a whirlwind evening of entertainment, live music, and theater performances along the streets of Downtown Bryan. This Friday, February 3, two productions eagerly await their first audience.
Kicking off the night at Square One Event Center is the opening performance of “The Effect” by The Hourglass Theatre, a College Station based company. “The Effect,” a play written by Lucy Prebble, follows the story of Tristan and Connie, who participate in a clinical drug trial. To the frustration of the physicians, they manage to disrupt the trial as they surrender to the inevitability of physical attraction and love.
Exploring the realm of human sanity, this play falls perfectly in line with the theme of the theatre’s current season: mental health. “The Effect” will perform at 7:00pm February 3 and 4 with a 2:00pm matinee on the 5. There is still time to reserve tickets for the show, and the performance is donation based, as The Hourglass Theatre believes the arts should be accessible to all.

Also leading First Friday is a performance by Third Rail Projects at VizNorth Studio, located off the corner of Main and 22nd Street. Third Rail Projects comes together with Texas A&M University’s Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts aim to deliver a unique, immersive theatre experience unlike any other. Third Rail Projects is a New York based, award winning, experiential dance and theater company that has reinvented what it means to perform for an audience in the contemporary age. The live performers are students from the University’s Dance Program and Performance Studies, and the production will also include video projections and sound installations designed by Architecture faculty and staff. Admission for the show, which will run February 3 and 4, is free, and will begin at 7:00pm. Every 15 minutes, there will be a new slot for reservation, and each slot will consist of a maximum of 12 people.
As always, the streets of Downtown Bryan will be alive with art, magic, and fun. Most shops and restaurants adjust to the influx of traffic and are open late.
