It’s hard to duplicate the success of an original movie, especially in today’s world where sequels come out before the first film even leaves the theater.
But if production takes its time, another masterpiece can happen. That’s what occurred with the 2019 release of “The Lego Movie 2.”
The film’s plot picks up almost immediately following the first, but soon after skips ahead five years to reveal that the happy-go-lucky town of Bricksburg has turned into a wasteland named Apocalypseburg. Emmet, voiced by Chris Pratt, hasn’t changed much from his original appearance, but begins a mission to adapt to the new world and save his friends after Lucy, Batman, Benny, MetalBeard and Unikitty are all kidnapped by alien invaders.
“The Lego Movie 2” falls short of the first film in originality and overall storyline, but the warmth and fun still exist. Pratt continues to be the heart and soul of the franchise, taking on multiple roles for the film and even making fun of characters from his other works, such as Jurassic World.
While the first “Lego Movie” felt almost real, this script felt a little bit out there. Despite the absurdities that exist within the plot, the jokes are still hilarious, and the experience is just fun. It’s easily one movie you will want to watch again and again, if only to catch all of the jokes you laughed through the first time.
