The world-renowned Russian Ballet is spreading its magic in College Station on February 1 in Rudder Auditorium performing the Spanish classic, “Don Quixote.”
After its formation in Moscow in 1989, the Russian Ballet has quickly risen in global esteem as one of the top ballet companies in the world. With 50 of the best ballerinas Russia has to offer, they are sure to dazzle audiences with their grace and talent.
Despite the youth of this company, Russian Ballet groups have formed a distinguishable niche in the world of high-class entertainment. The Russian style of ballet is distinct in its form and is rich in Russian tradition. Among their many accolades, the company boasts an impressive repertoire of all of the major ballet shows from “the father of classical ballet,” Marius Pepita. In addition to choreographing the ballet version of “Don Quixote,” he also choreographed “The Sleeping Beauty” and “The Nutcracker.”
The story of “Don Quixote” is a narrative of deep romance and chivalry. In its original form, “Don Quixote” is a book written in 1605 during the Spanish Golden Age. It was altered to be put in a ballet medium in 1869 by the Ballet of the Imperial Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the predecessor to this Russian Ballet company. The tale involves a man by the name of Don Quixote who is so saddened by the death of chivalry–and slightly deluded by all the romance stories he’s read–he sets out to right the wrongs of the world.
The performance takes major scenes from the book to form into a ballet. You can expect dazzling scenes that display the expertise of the artists, it would be no surprise to see this performance do justice to “Don Quixote” because of the rich history with Russian ballets.
Runtime for the ballet is two hours, which includes a twenty minute intermission. Ticket prices range from $13 to $45 depending on location and the show starts at 7:30pm on February 1. Take a break from the week and step into another world with the Russian Ballet.
