Texas A&M ice hockey is building champions just as is expected from Texas A&M club sports. The team gains membership and skill each season and they have moved up in ranking each year. The Aggies have a 15-7-1 record for the 2016-2017 season and are currently ranked #2 on the Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference standings. This season will be coming to a close soon, and the Aggies are looking forward to the playoffs on February 9-11.
According to Assistant Coach, Jason King, the current team, “might be the most talented overall team we’ve had come through Texas A&M hockey.” They have had great success throughout the season beginning in August, and the players and staff are eager for their upcoming games.
“We are very confident in the the way the rest of the season will go,” King revealed to Maroon Weekly.
We also had the privilege of catching up with #38 senior center, Michael Mirabella who told us about the strength of the team. “We lost a few games early on in the season, however, we were able to rebound back and start playing the way we should have been” Mirabella said. “We just recently beat one of the top teams in the country.”
The team is a family on and off the ice, and there is no doubt this group of Aggies are destined for greatness. “These guys have definitely become brothers of mine and made this season one I will always remember” Mirabella said.
On February 3, the Aggies will face rival Longhorns at Spirit Ice Arena located on Holleman Dr. Any competition against the University of Texas is one that Aggies are known to let their competitive side show.
“As the last contact sport between the two schools, there is more than a fair share of competitiveness and it tends to get aggressive,” Coach King revealed to us.
This is bound to be a great game full of excitement, rivalry, and Aggie spirit. The game is at 7:30pm with tickets sold before and at the event. Tickets can be purchased from Spirit Ice Arena at $10 general admission and $7.50 for A&M students.
