New York’s hot-jazz darlings are coming to the BCS area to help bring you and yours holiday cheer. MSC OPAS will be presenting The Hot Sardines “Holiday Stomp” concert on Wednesday, December 9 at 7:30pm in Rudder Theatre.
The Hot Sardines are one of the hottest acts currently touring the country. For their special holiday concert they will be putting their own unique twist on the classics like “White Christmas” and “Please Come Home for Christmas”. Also keep an ear out for lesser-known gems like Edith Piaf’s “Le Noël de La Rue” and Ella Fitzgerald’s “Santa Claus Got Stuck in My Chimney.” The Sardines are influenced by post-Prohibition New York, Paris and New Orleans jazz making their sound one unlike anything you’ve ever heard.
“Greats like Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Django Reinhardt, Count Basie, Fred Astaire, Mamie Smith, Billie Holiday, the Andrews Sisters, Ray Charles and a full-on melting pot of musicians both iconic and obscure have influenced our style and song interpretation,” said Miz Elizabeth Bougerol.
The Hot Sardines were the brainchild of Evan “Bibs” Palazzo and Miz Elizabeth, and they pride themselves on being able to transform songs from another era into pop country for this century. Together Bibs and Miz Elizabeth carefully manage the delicate balance of showcasing old songs – some of them nearly a century old – without being an “old-timey band.”
Band members include Miz Elizabeth on vocals, washboard and tambourine; Bibs bandleading and on piano, accordion and background vocals; Jason Prover on the trumpet; Nick Myers on reeds; Mike Sailors on the trombone and cornet; Alex Raderman on all things percussion; Evan “Sugar” Crane on the bass and sousaphone; and “Fast Eddy” Francisco tap dancing.
Ticket prices range from $26 – $50, and as always, special ticket prices will be available to all area students. Purchase tickets at the MSC Box Office at 979-845-1234 or online at mscopas.org.
