Six decades of authentic and soulful music went into perfecting the sound of Grady Gaines and the Texas Upsetters who will be coming to College Station Thursday, September 24.
Grady Gaines, legendary saxophonist, started his journey when he met Little Richard and became the leader of the Upsetters, which led them to back Little Richard on tour and on countless hit records. You might recognize Gaines’ attitude-drenched playing on classic hits like “Long Tall Sally” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On.”
Once Little Richard retired, Grady Gaines and the Texas Upsetters went on to add a unique flair to talents like Sam Cooke, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Bo Diddley, and many others.
MSC OPAS is partnering with the Texas A&M University Press to present this historic event that includes a book-signing to follow the concert. Gaines’ memoir, “I’ve Been Out There: On the Road with Legends of Rock n’ Roll,” was published by the A&M Press earlier this year. In the book, Gaines co-authors his story with the help of award-winning journalist Rod Evans to deliver a frank recounting of Gaines’ wild life on the road and the discrimination he experienced along the way.
